Abelard the Sorrowful, and the rest of Albertus's answers

The monk will not answer a question. He will finish a sentence. Pick up the charcoal and write these five lines in this order.

  1. 1Abelard the Sorrowful
  2. 2Svartrau Plaza
  3. 3…his penance, the place of his redemption
  4. 4…never once set foot inside it
  5. 5St. Mihai, a great warrior, arrived at Vale Sangora…

Polygon and TheGamer count picking up the charcoal as the first step of six. Method and KhrazeGaming’s video open by telling Albertus you are looking for St. Mihai’s sword, then take the charcoal. The five lines themselves are the same everywhere; the wording drifts a little between guides, and the game accepts the option, not your spelling.

Where the house is

Where each guide puts Albertus’s house
GuideWhere it says to go
PolygonA small corner building in the west of the Middens, covered in his scribbles.
TheGamerAlong the westernmost edge of the Middens.
Game8The far north of the slums — hold Focus Mode and look for the house under yellow scribbles.
IGNEnter the Middens from the east and follow the scribbling on the walls inward. Watch for the dogs.
GameSpotThe western outskirts of Svartrau City, and the place is crawling with undead dogs.

Who they both are

Anca sends you to Albertus because, in the dialogue captured in the Amouri Show video, he was the chronicler of Knyaz Skender’s reign, paid to praise the man and leave out his sins, whose real subject was the history of the valley. He had nearly finished it when the plague came; the vrakhiri banished him and destroyed the writings, and he has been alone in a plague-ridden slum since. TheGamer’s reading of the scribbles is that he is writing down what he memorised before he loses it.

Abelard is the harder question. The five lines rebuild a chapter about a master architect who arrived at the place of his penance, laid his sins under the foundations of Svartrau Cathedral, and never once set foot inside it, and the name sits at its head. The dialogue captured in the Amouri Show video does not say who Abelard was, or whether he is that architect, and the guides print the line without explaining it.

What you get

  • The location of the sword. The finished chapter puts St. Mihai’s silver sword in the crypt beneath Svartrau Cathedral, which is where the quest goes next.
  • 150 XP for the step, by IGN’s count.
  • A manual in the house — and the two guides that mention it name different ones. IGN says loot the books near Albertus for a Witchcraft Manual; GameSpot says take the Herbal Remedies I Manual from the pile of discarded things. Search the room either way.

The quest around it is costed differently too: IGN puts A Monk and a Saint at one time unit, while Game8 and GeekStinkGaming both say two. IGN also routes the whole quest through the night, where Game8 lists it as available day or night and the other guides lay out two separate routes.

The lines, the house, and who Abelard was

What do you write for Abelard the Sorrowful?
Pick up the piece of charcoal, then write, in order: Abelard the Sorrowful; Svartrau Plaza; his penance, the place of his redemption; never once set foot inside it; St. Mihai, a great warrior, arrived at Vale Sangora. Method and KhrazeGaming's video start by telling Albertus you are looking for St. Mihai's sword before taking the charcoal.
Where is Albertus in The Blood of Dawnwalker?
In the Middens, the slum outside Svartrau City. Polygon and TheGamer put his house at the western edge, Game8 says the far north of the slums, and IGN comes in from the east following the scribbles. The house is the one covered in writing, and Focus Mode picks the trail out.
Who is Abelard the Sorrowful?
The line opens a chapter of the chronicle Albertus is reciting from memory, about a master architect who laid his sins under the foundations of Svartrau Cathedral and never once set foot inside it. The captured dialogue does not say who Abelard was. He is a separate figure from Albertus, who is the chronicler of Knyaz Skender's reign.
Do you have to visit Albertus at all?
Polygon says no: finishing Night Terrors gives you A Monk and a Saint and lets you skip the Find Albertus objective entirely.
