Echoes of Silenced Bells

The first thing Anca asks of you after the prologue: get her into the library of the convent she used to live in, past a courtyard of nuns who died and did not stop moving. There are two ways across, a relic worth keeping, a bone worth pocketing for later, a boss in the catacombs, and a choice about some notes.

Getting in

Follow Anca through the fog to the convent. A nun attacks, you run, and you end up upstairs in the refectory with a balcony over the courtyard. Investigate the leftmost point of interest and the two rightmost ones and three objectives open: the infirmary, the chapel and the bell tower. The library is the goal and a few dozen nuns are in the way. From here you can take either route below, or both — if you want both, do the relic first.

Route one: St. Tyna’s relic

The nun is one of the bodies worth carrying catalysts for; the Compel Soul page lists the bodies worth carrying one for.

  1. 1

    Talk through the infirmary window

From the balcony go left, drop down, hug the wall to the infirmary and use Focus Mode on the window on its left side, below the stairs. Brencis's soldiers are trapped inside. The dialogue order: introduce yourself, say you have to get into the library, that you are looking for certain books, that it must be something precious, then agree. They will open the way for St. Tyna's relic, which starts the Most Precious Thing sub-quest.

  2. 2

Find out where the relic went

The quest marker sits on the church, but the relic is not there. Going in gets you cutscenes and St. Tyna's corpse; picking up the prayerbook and rosary lets you compel the dead nun, who says the relic is in the sacristy. The full church investigation may cost two turns, and the compel alone is enough. The same clue is also in a lootable box on a ledge opposite the corpse.

  3. 3

    Get the monastery keys

In the small shed west of the church, guarded by one sleepy nun. The keys hang on a hook on the wall, or are on the nun's corpse there. Either way one set opens every locked door in the convent.

  4. 4

Take the relic from the sacristy

The building on the west side of the courtyard with a small cross on the roof. The relic is on the neck of the dead nun just inside. It is an Epic amulet, which may show up as the Crimson Amber Medallion.

  5. 5

Hand it over, or do not

Give it to the soldiers and you get the infirmary key and lose the relic. Say "I changed my mind" and they attack: kill them, loot the key from a body, and keep the relic, which reportedly strengthens your witchcraft. Killing them may count toward Infamy and alert Brencis to you. Anca's reaction is the same either way.

Route two: the bells

The nuns still keep the routine the bells used to set. The book that explains it, the Campana Loquitur, is on the floor of the building beside the sacristy — either the westernmost building or the house to the left of it. Without the book the bells do nothing. Then get to the tower: at night you can cross the roofs and enter through the gap in the wall; by day you need the monastery keys from the shed to open the door below the tower, to the right of the main church doors. Pull the rope.

What each bell signal does
SignalWhat the nuns do
DormitoryThe nuns move to the far side of the courtyard, but still block the library.
ChurchThe nuns gather in the church. The way to the library is clear.
InfirmaryThe nuns break into the infirmary and kill the soldiers. Ring the church signal afterwards to clear them out again.

One good order is infirmary then church: the nuns slaughter the soldiers, then leave, and you loot the soldiers and every building on the way to Anca. You keep the relic and never make the deal.

The catacombs and Leonica

Tell Anca the way is clear and follow her into the library — the shelves are full of skill books. She asks you to move a bookcase; behind it a tunnel drops into the catacombs. Quick-slot a torch. Zombie nuns pop up along the way, and the door at the end reportedly costs one segment. Behind it is Leonica, She Who Speaks With the Devil. She strings unblockables together, her bats curve toward you so a late dodge beats an early one, and she calls minions. Voracious Bite works on her; the minions only give action points.

Burn the notes, or give them to Anca

Anca explains that Leonica was trying to cure the nuns and wants to finish the work. The first timed reply (“This won’t end well” or the ruder one) reportedly changes nothing; the real choice comes next.

  • Burn them. The nuns stay at the convent. Anca is a little upset and recovers quickly. No further deals.
  • Give them to her. The nuns vanish, seemingly freed, though her words are less than certain. She mentions more unholy pacts, which reportedly resurface later in her questline and may shape how you feel at the Font of Life. Takes one turn.

Either way Between the Words starts next, Anca behaves the same, and the romance is untouched, though she is reportedly happier if you let her try.

Starting it, the relic, the notes and Leonica

How do you start Echoes of Silenced Bells?
It unlocks by itself when the prologue ends, as long as Anca is alive. Meet her at the old inn — the Crossroads Inn on the east side of the map — and tell her you are ready for the convent, which costs one turn. The convent is St. Tyna's, in the south of St. Tyna's Grove.
Where is St. Tyna's relic?
Not in the church, whatever the marker says. It is on a dead nun in the sacristy, the building with the cross on its roof on the west side of the courtyard, behind a door that needs the monastery keys from the shed west of the church.
Should you give the relic to the soldiers?
Only if you do not want it. It is an Epic amulet. Refusing means killing the soldiers, which may count against you with Brencis's court — but you keep the relic and still get the infirmary key from their bodies. Or skip the soldiers entirely and use the bells.
Should you burn the notes?
Neither answer costs you anything with Anca, and the romance is unaffected either way. Burn them and the nuns stay as they are; she is briefly upset. Give them to her and the nuns vanish, freed or only seemingly so; she mentions she had to make more unholy pacts to do it, and it may come up again later in her questline. Giving them takes one turn.
How do you beat Leonica?
She chains several unblockable attacks in a row, so be ready to dodge more than once, and her bats swerve toward you — do not dodge early. She summons minions; Voracious Bite works on her but not on them, and killing them restores action points. Consider arriving at night for your vampire powers.
Is Echoes of Silenced Bells a main quest?
It can be counted either way: a side quest at 6–8 segments, or the seventh main quest if you mainline the story. It is the start of Anca's questline either way.
