The valley, region by region
One open map in the Carpathians, carved up between three boyars. Nothing scales to your level, so where you go decides how hard the fights are.
Vale Sangora is one open world, and gameranx's point about it is the one that changes how you play: there is no level scaling, and each region is built around a power level. Hovering a region name on the map shows which court member holds it, which is also how you pick your next target — Infamy is raised by wrecking their operations. IGN and Fextralife index quests by region, and those are the ones below — Fextralife folds Svartrau City and its outskirts together, where IGN keeps them apart.
| Region | Held by | What is there | Quests |
|---|---|---|---|
| Laslea Glen | No court member named | Coen's home valley: the church, Anca's hut, the Crossroads Inn on the east side of the map, and the outcast graveyard. | 13 |
| Briar Sloughs | Ambrus | Bogs and the Briar Sloughs Watchtower south of town, with Stoneward Post to the west. Polygon calls Ambrus's regions the least dangerous. | 5 |
| Maragir Wealds | Ambrus | Maragir town on the eastern edge — armourer, grocer, and the start of Star-Crossed Lovers and Buried Past. Fextralife rates the region for levels 10 to 18 and gives 50 XP for discovering it. | 3 |
| St. Tyna's Grove | Ambrus | The convent of Echoes of Silenced Bells, and blood carts along the northern road. Xanthe's Lost Blood quest runs here too, so the borders blur. | 9 |
| Svartrau City | Bakir | The capital: the cathedral, the Altenmarkt district, the Middens slum outside the west gate, and smugglers' caves beneath it. | 9 |
| Svartrau Outskirts | Ambrus runs prisoner convoys here | The ground outside the walls. Intercepting a convoy in the north unlocks Ursul as a swordmastery trainer. | — |
| Rockfalls | Bakir | The Uriashi in the hills, and the matriarch Lacra takes you to see. | 4 |
| The Silts | Bakir, and Xanthe's recruiters work here | The deep south, and the tower where Home Sweet Home takes place. | — |
| Boar's Back | No court member named | Boar's Back Tower and the quests Fextralife files here: Burrow Sorrows, The Beast of Balaur and Where Loyalty Lies. | 3 |
| Tantari Woods | Xanthe | Her recruiters operate here, and GameSpot puts the Howling Keep west of it. | — |
The quest column counts the costed side quests on the quest table, which follows Game8’s region labels. Two of those labels are folded in here: Game8’s Westridge Outpost is counted under Rockfalls, where Fextralife files those quests, and Codrin’s Hunting Lodge under Maragir Wealds. A dash means none are filed there.
How big is it, really
PowerPyx estimates about 10 square kilometres, which it describes as roughly four kilometres top to bottom by three at the widest, narrower in the upper half. What the studio has said is the opposite of a boast — a quest designer told Gamescom the world “isn’t that big”, and GameRant reads the whole thing as a deliberate step down in size in exchange for freedom. It is all walkable land with no mounts, which is why it plays larger than the number sounds.
Impressions split on whether that lands. gameranx’s preview called it a condensed open world and the smaller size an advantage; the same channel’s review said the physical world is actually kind of large given how tight the game was sold as being. IGN’s hands-on sits between them: large without threatening to overwhelm, and not a Skyrim you will still be exploring in a year. For coverage rather than crossing, PowerPyx puts three to four hours on unfogging every icon and visiting every shrine.
Svartrau City, district by district
- The Middens. The slum outside the west gate, emptied by the plague. Albertus lives here, and the silver trader keeps a shop just inside the gate leading to it.
- Altenmarkt. The district with the tavern on its west side, where Ocha waits and where a smuggler finds you once you are Notorious.
- The cathedral. One of the tallest buildings in the city. By day you talk your way in; at night you climb the tower on its southwest side with Shadowstep. Game8 and GameRant put it in the eastern part of the city, TheGamer just says the main part.
- Below it all. The official Xbox description mentions a vast network of caves under the city where smugglers have hidden things for generations.
At Infamy level 9 the gates shut. That is not a lockout: climb the walls at night, or find the damaged sections by day. The whole ladder is on the Infamy page.
Shrines, towers and the clock
Shrines do four jobs
Fast travel, spending skill points on perks, storage you can use before you are over-encumbered, and waiting. Grey icons are undiscovered, blue ones are live. A destroyed shrine needs its heart found first, which is a small quest each time, and AltChar says repairing one moves time on.
Towers are free map
IGN says they can only be climbed at night, and Arktix and KhrazeGaming both say they cost no time, so Arktix’s advice is to sweep them on the first nights. Each one adds points of interest. MapGenie’s legend counts eleven; KhrazeGaming reckons eight or nine.
The hourglass warns you
Grey segments appear on the timeline, with a ticking sound, just before you step into an activity that charges time. KhrazeGaming uses it in reverse: it is how you spot an activity is nearby at all.
Focus Mode and the zoom
Arktix’s rule of thumb: grey highlights are loot, gold is quest-related. Quests hand you a search circle rather than a pin. Arktix also points out that the caves and buildings drawn on the zoomed map are real places, before any marker appears.
Fast travel, Maragir Crossroads and Svartrau Plaza
- How does fast travel work in The Blood of Dawnwalker?
- Through shrines. Grey on the map means undiscovered, blue means active. AltChar says you must be standing at a shrine and interact with it to travel — hovering over an icon on the map does nothing. Destroyed shrines have to be repaired first by finding the shrine's heart, which is a small quest of its own. There is no horse to make up the distance; the getting-around page has the perks and the wolf form that replace it.
- Where is Maragir Crossroads?
- Maragir is the main town of the Maragir Wealds, on the eastern edge of the map, where the armourer and the grocer stand. Game8 uses the name Maragir Crossroads as the location of Star-Crossed Lovers, and video guides use it for the settlement itself; whether it means the town or a junction beside it is not settled.
- What is Svartrau Plaza?
- Two things at once. It is the second line you write in charcoal for Albertus during A Monk and a Saint, and it is also where Game8 says to go, during the day, to start Where Loyalty Lies once you are Notorious.
- Can you still get into Svartrau City at maximum Infamy?
- Yes. The level 9 edict shuts the gates, but G2A's guide says you can still climb the walls at night, and GameSpot adds that you can squeeze through openings and damaged sections by day.
